Annual Show / Best Plots 2019

 Annual Show 2019

TAA ANNUAL SHOW 2019

This year's show was held on 31st August on the Willow Walk site. There was a good turnout of members who entered numerous examples of fruit and veg grown on their allotments (see pictures below). Members then voted for their favourites in each category and rosettes awarded to the winners and runners up (click on Show Winners below for more details). As well as the produce show there was a tasty BBQ (with vegetarian options of course) followed by a delicious fruit trifle and tangy lemon meringue pie.

In the weeks prior to the show members were invited to vote for their favourite plots on both sites. The worthy winners were:
Lovibonds      : 1st - Plot 94 (Lauren B), Joint 2nd - Plots 72 & 73 (John T & Sue/Robin R), 3rd - Plot 67 (Matthew H).
Willow Walk: 1st - Plot 1 (Mike D), 2nd - Plot 2 (Judy E), 3rd - Plot 43 (Peter/Tandy G).

The overall winner, as decided by the show committee, was Mike D who was presented with the Harry Braybrooke memorial trophy.

We asked Mike to tell us a bit about his plot:

Mike discovered the allotment purely by chance when out walking on Tugmutton Common many years ago.  He decided to contact the committee for availability and was  installed soon after as a plot holder on the Willow Walk site. His plot was overgrown but he treated his new site as project. His objective was to make it low maintenance and to grow crops that would give him satisfaction and that he and his family would enjoy.  He has built a series of raised beds with clear pathways that have weed reduction fabric underneath and then covered bark chips. Mike rotates his beds every year and grows wide variety of produce: Potatoes, Kale, Chard, Runner beans , other Brassicas , Raspberries, Strawberry's, Rhubarb and Gooseberries. He also compliments this with a selection of flowers. His plot is neat, tidy and he has used recycled materials to achieve his objectives. He takes a great deal of satisfaction sitting back and enjoying the fruits of his labour.
